Freyja is the most powerful of the Aesir goddesses, and Freyr’s beguiling sister. She is in many ways a contradictory goddess, with power over life, death and magic. At the same time as she rules over fertility, love and desire, she is also a goddess of war and death.
She is versed in the magic arts and is the god’s most powerful volva. These are wise women who can fall into a trance called a sejd, and can talk with the spirits and see into the future. It was originally Freyja who initiated Odin into the mysteries of the trance.
