In the land of the Danes (i.e. present-day Denmark) the wise King Hrothgar ruled. He built a mighty hall called Heorot, and held court there. But all was not well in Hrothgar’s kingdom, for the land was plagued by the terrible swamp-monster Grendel. The exact nature of this fiend remains unclear – he is sometimes described as a troll, sometimes as a ghost or revenant, and sometimes as a giant or descendant of Cain, the first murderer. Perhaps the best label is "demon".
The illustration is from the book Dragons.
