The sea serpents of legend and folklore could reach lengths of several hundred metres and many were large enough to block off an entire fjord or bay if they got in the way of the inlet. Sea serpents could easily sink ships, with crew and all, by rising out of the water and slamming down on the deck like a scaly club, or by wrapping themselves around the ship like a boa constrictor and slowly crushing the hull to smithereens.
