A succubus (plural succubi) is a female demon from medieval legends, with characteristics of both vampires and the Scandinavian night hag mara. These ungodly spirits visit men at night and infiltrate their dreams. The victims awake bathed in sweat, harrowed and with a feeling of pressure on their chest, an experience often referred to in Swedish as being ‘marriden’ (ridden by a mara). Involuntary nocturnal ejaculations are another common result. A succubus can also take on the guise of an irresistibly beautiful and sensual woman. In this form she seduces men and goes to bed with them. The more pious the man is, the better, as her objective is to corrupt him completely.
Consequently, god-fearing monks are her preferred prey. Repeated encounters with a succubus gradually bring about death, or at least a complete physical and mental breakdown, as she drains the man of his life essence, much like a vam- pire. These beings are also said to feed on the blood of babies. The male version of a succubus, whose victims are primarily women, is called an incubus.
The illustration is from the book The Undead.
