These days trolls are often described as bumbling monsters, but that is not the whole truth. While the Norwegian fells may be home to mountain trolls that grow to be enormous and at times have an exceptionally grotesque appearance with several heads, warts on their skins and dribbling jaws, these trolls are more closely related to giants.
Forest trolls that live in the primeval Swedish forests often resemble humans. In fact it can be difficult to distinguish them from normal folk, both in terms of size and in appearance. Even if some trolls are ugly, with long noses, pointed ears and fangs in their jaws, young female trolls in particular can be great beauties, far more alluring than human women. But as a rule there is some little detail that gives them away, something about their facial features being slightly lopsided, their skin being a subtle shade of green, or their pupils taking on a strange shape in certain lights. Occasionally there will be a glimpse of a tail or a pair of cloven hooves beneath a skirt.
