The Salamander is one of the smallest creatures in the book Dragons, but that makes it no less fascinating. Since ancient times people have spoken of a mysterious little dragon sometimes observed dancing in the flames of crackling fires. The Renaissance mystic Paracelsus called these creatures Elementals, nature spirits that embodied the four elements – the building blocks of material reality according to medieval wisdom: earth, air, fire and water. The salamander was the elemental of fire, while the other three were gnomes (earth), sylphs (air) and undines (water).
